"What is corned beef?" he asked me, and I had to admit that I didn't know.

He gestured to a big stack of it. "How do I uncorn it?" he asked, looking worried.

"You need regular beef?"

"No," he replied, "I need a live cow, but I am trying to do this one step at a time."
