I was in the main San Francisco city library today and noticed that the big elevator goes many stories down. The bottom floors are supposed to lock, but today they were unlocked so I pushed the buttons and down I went, deep into the secret heart of the city.

There was a big machine down there, and on it a switch labeled VAGUE SENSE OF DISSATISFACTION. I set it to "Off" and immediately I felt better. I hadn't realized how worried I was!

On the elevator ride up, I had a brief and specific sense of unease - I felt guilty for pulling the switch. So I went and told a security guard what I'd done. She just shrugged. "It's not my job to care, and I never thought that machine was a good idea anyway."

Have you noticed a difference?
