One of the things that keeps me awake at night is the history of objects. Who sat in this chair before? What stories could this thrift-store used jacket tell. I realized something I could do about it.

I went to the Post Office and asked for a list of all the people who had set up forwarding addresses for my address and apartment number. I don't know if they are usually willing to do that, but in this case they did.

Well, my apartment's an old Victorian, so it's been around a while, and changed hands a lot. Looking through the list, well, my goodness. Vampires and vicars, poets and pirates, robots and riveters, jackalopes and jack-a-napeses, time travelling shoemakers and tie-wearing chihuahuas. A hundred years of apartment history -- and this is just the few who were conscientious enough to think of setting up a forward address with the Post Office.

I'm going to try tracking some of these folks down. Maybe I'll post an anthology of stories about the people who have lived in this apartment before me.
