I was at a bar last night, and bumped into an old friend. He was with some co-workers.

"So, Ted," he said, "Tell us why people always lose one sock in a pair when doing laundry?"

"Oh," I said, "It's because socks are small and easily lost, especially when you've got so much other laundry around. Also, sometimes people only load one sock in the pair because the other sock got scooted under the bed, or is behind the laundry hamper. You misplace the sock without realizing it."

"No," said the friend with an insistent wink, "Tell us the real reason."

"Oh, Okay. Well, you see, at the center of the sun is a man made of Pyrex and asbestos."

His friends chuckled but I continued.

"This little man sends everyone letters, with advice and fond wishes. He makes paper airplanes out of them and throws them, but they always burn up immediately. Still, sometimes those well-wishes turn into sunlight, and we feel the kind thoughts in the sunshine."

"Okay, but--"

"Hold on, let me finish. One day, this man realized what was happening, and he took a taxi to Denver, Colorado to try to set things right. It was much colder than he thought it would be, so he got the flu. But while he was in bed with the flu, he met a very nice person and they fell in love. And then you misplaced a stray sock without realizing it because they are small and easy to lose. The End."
