Go out there, over the water. You'll see patches of darkness. Go in a helicopter, or a really big boat, or even a plane. You'll see dark patches, and someone will tell you it's kelp. Sometimes they're right, but sometimes they're wrong. Some of the dark patches are eyes.
Are you afraid yet? Do you understand?
It lives under the sea, I tell you. It is hungry and angry and strange, but it's asleep. The patches get blacker as it wakes.
Do you want to live to see the end of summer? Are you concerned about what lurks in the water? Do you understand? Are you careful?
Be careful! Every time you correct someone's grammar or spelling, it wakes up a little more. Every time you litter. Every time you don't let someone change lanes to catch their exit. Every time you're rude over the phone to a customer, it tosses and turns. Every time you make fun of someone who is dancing. Every time you shoplift. Every time you see someone you know and don't say hello.
Did you see the same dark patches last summer? Do you understand? Do you dare to look into the eye of the sea?
It's a sea monster, green and grey and black and hungry. This world is an egg. It's a sea monster, large and clever and very, very sensitive. The decision is yours, entirely. It's a sea monster, all beaks and scales and spines and fins and sleek, black, slippery sharp skin.
Do you love other people? Do you get nervous around water? Do you breathe the same air you've exhaled? Do you make your life like a soap opera? Do you create battles just so you can win them? Do you wake up as you're drifting to sleep, surprised by a falling sensation? Do you drink the briny grey water of the ocean?
