My good friend J_____ took me to the Crazy Smart People Fair up in San Francisco. He sort of needed consolation, on account of recently being mugged and having the last four letters of his name stolen. He hasn't been able to afford anything but underscores, so he's been kind of down. So we went to the fair.

At one of the booths was a man with a cash register. "I'm selling stock for my new invention."

"What's that?"

"The neural network elevator. How quick an elevator is depends mostly on where the elevator waits, which one comes, and where it stops. Elevator behavior is irregular and unusual, and depends on a lot of things; time of day, day of week, number of people recently loaded, and so on. You can make an elevator go faster if it learns the best place to be at any given point, and if habits change, the elevator can learn that. Getting any kind of elevator installed is already going to be expensive, so an extra two thousand for guaranteed performance improvements, and constant update, is well worth it. My elevators would learn to serve you best."

"Okay," said I, "If you're so smart, riddle me this: Why are hair and beauty products in the U.S. labeled in both French and English?"

He looked confused for a moment, and I walked away. Truth is, I didn't have any investment money.
