This seems to work.
I picked up an old used book entitled "Getting the most out of your abacus," and it seems that you can use it to support a full TCP/IP stack. So I'm connecting from the parking lot in front of the book store to test it out, and it looks like it's working, only I can't actually log in to LiveJournal, because my abacus won't accept cookies.
